看到前几天在知乎上面看到一个问题，可能题主是国外留学生或者是英语学习者，他问道：essay，paper，dissertation，article用中文都是“文章”的意思，那他们的区别在哪里？

在中文里面，我们我们对这些词，只有“论文，文章”来表示，虽然也都是表示写出来的文章，但他们的使用场景其实是完全不一样的。

那下面，就说一下essay，paper，dissertation，article这四个单词的区别吧。

一.essay

a short piece of writing on a particular subject, especially one done by students as part of the work for a course

在某个学科上的短文章，特别指学生课程上的功课

可以看到，essay一般会指那些比较端的文章，注解里面还特别指那些“课堂上的功课”，同时，essay还会指一些杂文散文以及观点类文章（也可以看到这些都是一些短文章）

We asked Jason to write an essay about his hometown.

我们要求Jason写一篇关于他家乡的文章。

二.paper

a piece of writing on a particular subject written by an expert and usually published in a book or journal, or read aloud to other people

由专家撰写的学科文章，并且经常会用于书籍杂志的发布，又或者用于众人前的大声朗读

paper，经常会表示那些学者专家的文章，还可以看到，这些文章经常会用于杂志上的发布。（像那些发布在《Science》《Nature》上的科学类研究文章，就可以用paper来表示）

He just published a paper in the journal Nature.

他刚在《自然》杂志上发布了一篇文章。

三.dissertation

a long piece of writing on a particular subject, especially one that is done in order to receive a degree at college or university

特别指那些为了获学院和大学学位而完成的那些文章

看到这个解释，相信大家都知道，这个就是大学里面，你毕业所需要写的论文，而且还会特别对长度有严格要求，一般会指1万字以上的文章

Ann did her dissertation on Shakespeare.

Ann写的论文是关于莎士比亚的。

这几个文章有什么不一样？

四.article

a piece of writing on a particular subject in a newspaper or magazine, or on the internet

指哪些在报纸，杂志或者发布在网络上的文章

相比于上面三个的专业性，article就显得随性很多，我们平时看到的在公众号或者报纸上的文章，我们都能叫article

He writes newspaper articles in the Guardian.

他在卫报上写文章。
